Staying Logged In

Been having an issue staying logged in here on the forums, Assaf. Seems it wants to kick me switching forum areas or after replying to a message. Reverts me back to "Guest" status.
I do have cookies enabled, and I'm not using my "back" button on the browser. Any thoughts? Is this some sort of Canadian conspiracy to get yanks to switch over to Firefox or whatever it's called?
Seriouly, just wanted to let you know and find out if I'm doing something screwy on my end that's causing it. Thanks!
Tim
EDIT: Seems to happen when you use the "Jump to..." [GO] button at the bottom of pages, mostly. If you use the "tree" above the messages, it works okay. I think.
EDIT #2: Nope, happens other times too. It also rejects my password after a while, requiring me to shutdown the browser entirely and re-log in order to get back on.

When you log in, there is a dropdown box next to the login button that says how long to keep you logged in for. If you set it to forever then it shouldnt ever log you out. I havent had this problem myself but I do use Firefox.. Maybe the Mason family is involved...

I've not seen the problem either, but this yank is TRYING to convert people to Firefox (yes, that's what it's called - from the Mozilla folks <g>).
The only thing I can think of other than browser issue (what ARE you using BTW?) would be the setting on when you signed in and it may have inadvertantly been told to remember a really short setting. Check your profile or whatever it's called here...I think you can adjust that there.

I know some browsers can be set to automatically delete cookies after a certain number of days.

I still use the EEEEEE-vil and vile IE7. Don't have any problems with cookies or such anywhere else. It defaults to "forever" and that's where I leave it, but it still likes logging me out. Ah well, go figger.

Have you noted any set length of time or does that vary?
Are you DOING something when it logs you out or have you been inactive for a bit? (how long a bit?)
Just wondering if I might be able to reproduce it on IE6, but need a starting point. <g>

I've used both IE6 and Firefox and haven't had this problem. Could there be a chance that you are visiting another site which uses the same forum software and they happen to use the same name for the cookie?

No particular length of time, although oddly enough although I've only been logged in for several minutes, I've noticed at the top of the screen it reads the following:

Tim,
That time at the top is the TOTAL time you have EVER been logged in to the board, not just for this session, so that's not as weird as it might seem.

Nope. I only partake in a handful of online forums, and this is the only one of its kind that I'm subscribed to.
I'd install Firefox, but I have this old Irish sensibility that balks at the notion of having two of something when one works just fine. Which is probably why I only have one pair of shoes at a time too.
Maybe I'll have to break down and install it just for this forum.
For what it's worth, I used to really like the old Navigator browser. When it went to "Mozilla", it kinda sucked IMO. So I haven't bothered since. Again, 99.9% of the sites I visit work with IE7 with no problem. /shrug

While I'm at it, I should mention too that when I pull up a listing of messages, the "NEW" graphic isn't shown, but rather the red "X" placeholder in IE7. Don't know if that is it's own issue, or something connected to my apparent cookie problem.

Tim,
I just found a copy of IE7 (had to turn some stones over). I see the same white box/red x as you do on the new notification, but don't see that in Firefox. I'm logged in as me, IE7 and on this board. I'll see if it kicks me off, but I'm thinking at this point that IE7 is the culprit on this deal.
I know that IE7 is NOT as compatible with the web as some would like it to be and this may be one of those times. I have no idea if the people that do this software have heard of this before or have plans to address it. Maybe Assaf can enlighten us on that.
Ok, looks like I was able to type this message anyway without getting kicked off....good start!
Tom
Did you say that there is no set time for it to log you out?

Doesn't appear to be a function of time but rather of what you do that bumps you off. One sure fire method that works for me is using the "GO" button at the bottom of the screen to navigate back to the message screen(s).
For what it's worth, I checked the "Privacy Report" fuction of IE7 (that's the little eyeball at the bottom of the screen if you have the status bar turned on.) If you double click that, it will come up with the privacy settings for the site you're on. It seems most of the trouble stems from the fact that IE7 is looking for a "Compact Privacy Policy", and if it doesn't find one, it turns off cookies! I manually turned on cookies for scannow.org/forums.htm/ and it seems to be working okay. Will mess around some more and see if that fixed it.

I just tried the goto and went to Missouri in the US specific systems list...stayed logged in. I do NOT have the eyeball on the bottom of my screen, so it sounds like something to do with how you have your privacy settings set. I guess experimentation is going to be the key. Let us know what worked out to be "the answer" for you.

My guess was that the security settings were blocking the cookie because of a lack of a compact privacy statement. It would, for a time, maintain what are called "session cookies" that would let me navigate for a time, but if an action "handed me off" to a sub-server before bringing me back to the forum, it lost the session cookie and appeared to go "braindead" until I re-logged on. I'm guessing by essentially putting the forum into my "okeydokey" safe list, it's enabling regular cookies and keeping me logged in.
At least, that's my theory. I could be wrong.
EDIT: That appears to be it. I even hit the "Jump to...GO" button and it kept me logged in this time. Woohoo! Seems we figured that one out. And none too soon, either! I was really worried I'd have to install that satanic commie Firefox software!

I'm glad you two figured it out. Never knew about that privacy policy in IE7. And if you didn't , well , you never know you might have taken a liken to FF and its many available handy plugins.

Glad you found the answer! Security is nice, but it sure gets in the way some times.

Just for follow-up...I've been running a couple days now with the "fix" for IE7, and it seems to be working fine. No log-outs, no problems with cookies, all is right with the world.
My work here is done.
