I've been using freescan for about a year now and it has worked great. I am using a BCD-996XT and a USB cable purchased from scannermaster. This worked fine until recently and I'm not sure if it has to do with the upgrade to freescan 2.10. When I try to upload or control the scanner virtually I get an unable to communicate or scanner incompatible message. I've checked all the settings for the port both in the radio and on freescan. When I try autodetect I get nothing also. I loaded freescan and tried on another computer with the same result. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. Any ideas??

You can check device manager, unplug the cable, plug it back in and see if it picks up a com port. It will list several com ports of course but most of them will be ghost ones hence the need to plug and unplug the cable.

yeah, I tried that. I also tried doing a firmware update to the scanner but it won't communicate with it either. I'm leaning toward a problem with the cable possibly. I contacted scannermaster and the cable's designer but they haven't been able to help much.

Yeah normally it's on Com3. I unplugged it and put it in a different port and Com 4 was the port. This also shows up in free scan when I hit refresh-it's like it knows what port i'm trying to get it to work on, but it can't communicate to the radio.

It sounds like your cable might have bummed out. Wouldn't be the first one to have gone thats for sure.

That will be disappointing if that is the case since I just got it not that long ago. The designer of the cable thinks it's a hardware issue with my radio, but I don't think so. I'm going to contact scannermaster and see if they'll help me out.

If you continue to have problems with the USB to RS-232 cable(s), you might go old school and get a PCI expansion card(or whatever format expansion card your computer supports), assuming you have a desktop computer. I bought a dual port for around $25, so now I have two more real RS-232 ports, instead of trying to find a reliable USB to RS-232 adapter.

It was the cable. I went to best buy and bought a serial to USB adapter. Everything works fine using my cable that came with the scanner. It sucks that this cable I bought from scanner master only lasted 3 months. They won't help me at all either-there goes buying anything from there.
