Uninstalling old version prior to updating
«

I always uninstall the old version of Freescan before I update to the latest version. What potential problems might occur if I didn't uninstall the old version first?
Is it possible to design Freescan so that installing the latest version automatically overwrites any older version? Maybe you could put in a dialog box that says, "Do you want to uninstall the previous version first?" Manually uninstalling the older version isn't that big of a deal, I was just wondering how difficult it would be.
Thanks for your efforts in this great program!

Nothing will happen if you don't uninstall the old version, although depending on how old then you might be wasting a couple megs of disk space. There is no need to uninstall the old version before installing the new one. The Nullsoft installer I now use always overwrites the old version, the older installer I had before sometimes didn't really understand that concept and so people had to do an uninstall first. But you don't have to anymore.

Hate to say it, but it hasn't worked for me in quite some time. I'm running XP SP3 here, and I usually end up having to use CCleaner to get rid of the references to the old version - otherwise I almost always either get a 'searching' message when I click on the shortcut, or the older version gets executed.
YMMV, of course. If this is what happens to you, you know what you have to do...73 Mike

If you have a shortcut pointing to a version installed with the old installer, when you try to launch it, Windows will just reinstall the program for you and launch it, or it will start raising error messages on it. That was a big problem with the old installer, since even after you upgraded, if you used anything other then the default shortcut to launch then Windows will think you must want that old version. The new installer is much less complicated and doesn't have these issues.
