3 weeks and still a lot to learn.After i create a trunked system in freescan
and download the program into my scanner,do i still need to go and do manual tweaks to
optimize.996xt

You can save the file and edit it on your computer, then reupload the "tweaks". It depends on what kind of tweaks you mean though. For example, P25 levels can't be adjusted on the 996XT via software.

I downloaded Starcom21,(Home is just west of Chicago) but i don't feel that i have optimized the scanners
capability.I'm sure that i will be asking for help in the near future. In the mean time thanks for your help.

Are you using a USB Serial convertor? Sounds like it might be a driver issue.

I am using a USB Serial convertor. A couple of days ago I did change the baud rate to 115200 from 57600?. I will go back to 57600 and see if i get the same
message.

I would also suggest to make you have Control Channel Extended output turned off. Having this one can crash FreeSCAN.

First,Thanks for the quick response. The Control Channel Extended output was not on. It seems that going back to the slower baud rate took care of the problem.

How do you download the settings in the set scanner option screen.
When i go in the Service Search screen and change from news to air then OK but it always
defaults back to news. Please help.

It's just giving you an option of which service you want to change settings for. It always defaults back to news. It doesn't mean that your scanner will scan news, it is just there for changing settings specific to that service search.
