My Quick Key Print is all messed up with 0.9F
«

Assaf,
Please take a look at my printout of my assigned Quick Keys. Any suggestions of what I am doing wrong? Printouts of same using previous versions of FreeSCAN were fine. I've tried changing the font type and size and have gotten no difference.
Thanks for your great software.

Assaf,
I use Firefox when I browse. I was not aware that IE is invoked when using FreeSCAN. But, anyway, I do have IE installed and it is Ver. 8 (please see captured picture below)

IE is used to perform a lot functions in FreeSCAN. It's a lousy browser but the built in functions can be used to do useful tasks. I'm wondering what font and size you have selected? Also it looks like you might have it set to a non standard page size? I am wondering because I am having difficulties reproducing that problem here and have the same version of IE.

This is what I did:
1. I choose Print
2. Then I check “Print Quick Key Summary”
3. In the same dialogue pane, I press “Page Setup”
4. Then I press the “Change Font”
5. I select the first entry “”@Arial Unicode MS”, “Regular” and Size 8, then the “OK” button
I still get the same printout as what I first sent you. No change in font or size, columns crammed together so that lines fold over without attractive tabbing.
Am I supposed to choose size and font in IE? I do not how to do this if yes.
I believe I was able to change font and size before 0.9F
As for page size, I got that straightened out when you helped me get all that I was supposed to see all the radio buttons when I was doing Ez-Grab! downloading.
Thanks,
Peter

Ok well, I suspect it may have to do something to do with how the page size and margins are setup. They might be just set too small for anything to fit so it has to wrap around. I'd try it again using Letter and see if it happens.

FYI
It works fine for me to print the SQK summary on a 3 x 5 card in landscape mode. I set each of the margins to its minimum setting before printing. I've got three columns. They contain 19, 19 and 13 systems. The header contains the name of the scanner and the date.

I tried a different approach. Up to now, I have been printing directly from the FreeSCAN page, i.e., I choose PRINT, SELECT ALL, PREVIEW.. (here I get the what image I sent in my previous posts), then PRINT. My printer prints out what is seen in the PREVIEW screen.
Just now, I tried PRINT TO HTML. Now I know why IE is involved. The file I saved is what I am looking for. On the IE page, I then I have to "Edit with Microsoft Office Word" to change font and size, etc.
I guess I am not sure how to change parameters when printing directly from FreeSCAN (without using IE).
Thanks.

You can change those parameters in the setup. If you click on Page Properties (or something similar I don't remember offhand) you can set your page size and margins. I suspect they are too small.

Assaf,
If you mean the "Page Setup" button above the "Print to HTML" button, I have done that and that will change the settings for when I print to HTML, but still, not when I print to printer directly from the software.
Thank you

The way that I'm doing it is to click on
File --> Print...
then make sure that the box is checked for "Print Quick Key Summary" and that the other two boxes are unchecked. Then click on Page Setup.
In my case, I use 3 x 5 cards so I set that in the Page Setup as the Paper Size, select Landscape, leave Enable Shrink to Fit checked, and set all four margins to 0. Those settings then change automatically to the minimum that you can use. I then enter the name of the scanner in the first of the header fields and select "Date in short format" for the last header field. I use the default font at 9 pt bold.
Click OK, then Show Print Dialog, Print.
See if that will work for you.

Chili, you have to be doing
something
. The page setup does affect when you print directly. I suspect you have wacky values entered in for the page size and margins but can't tell for sure.

Assaf,
Thank you and Dick for trying to help me. I do not get the things that Dick does, such as
I do not have a 3x5 option in the Page Size window.
Assaf, I downloaded 0.9F just minutes after you released it. Could it be possible that you made a correction to 0.9F after I downloaded it?
Thanks

Nothing was changed in .9F since I uploaded the file, and nothing printing wise changed between it and .9E. It's got to be something in your Page Setup. My margins for example are all .75, Letter page size, and shrink-to-fit enabled.

Chili,
Have you tried redownloading and reinstalling? Perhaps your download or installation got corrupted.

I tried downloading again.
Look at the attached: see, I can change the font and size of the headers, but the body does not change at all.. not even the size.
Ideally, I would like to move the columns further apart and have the text of each line wrap around neatly in its own column. I can's seem to find a way to do that other than printing to computer and editing with MS Word.
Not a big deal.. I could live with that.
Thanks.

In going back and rereading this thread I noticed that you said that you didn't get a 3 x 5 paper size. When you are in Word, do you get a 3 x 5 paper size there? It seems that FreeScan uses things like the font list and paper sizes from Windows generally, although Assaf can comment specifically on that. Perhaps there is a font missing that FreeScan wants to use and can't find. It might then substitute a different font which is close, but slightly larger and therefore not fitting in the space allocated for it.
Assaf, any possibility that's his problem?

Dick, Chili and Assaf,
I just tried Dick's sequence on my copy of FreeSCAN (Windows XP and an Epson printer) and it appears to have done what I expected. I *did* have to choose the Epson printer as I have my default set to "print to text" and that has caused issues with some programs in past. I did a quick test with about 8 systems and got 2 columns of text with the quickkeys to the left of the systems.
Dick, thanks for the "road map".
Chili, you might want to try following it to the letter and report back on what you get. BTW - I didn't have a 5x7 option until I chose the Epson printer.

Assaf,
My printer is a Canon MP240 ink jet.
But Assaf, even before I even think of printing directly from FreeSCAN, the Print Preview in FreeSCAN shows me that the body text is not affected by my choice of font size and type, but only the headers.

Chili,
I'm under the impression that the body text is not supposed to be affected by the choice of font size and type. That's the case for me and I notice that the font button is within the frame for the headers and footers which would seem to indicate that it only affects them and not the body size. This doesn't present any problems for me since the program automatically chooses a font type and size that works well for what I want to do.
That was the point of my post about the possibility of you having a missing font. If the program is looking for a particular font that you don't have, it might be using a similar, but different font that throws off the spacing.
BTW, I use 3 x 5, not 5 x 7, so I can't say how 5 x 7 would work out.

You can change that font by selecting the "Customize Layout" tab and then clicking on Font....

Okay Assaf,
ok for the font, now how do I adjust the column positions so that the text will not wrap or if they do, they wrap with neat indentations:
eg.
-----------------------------------------
1. This is a test, wrap now
with neat indentation.
------------------------------------------
This is a test, wrap now
1. with not so neat
indentation.
-------------------------------------------
I hope the examples above illustrate okay.

Column sizes aren't adjustable. I was never able to get it to wrap in my testing so I didn't make them that way. But I am going to try and reproduce the problem and then I will get back to you.

I just learned something. I hadn't realized that the font size and type were adjustable in that way although I should have since it now seems obvious.
That being the case, I can reproduce Chili's problem by setting the font size too big. When I return it to Microsoft Sans Serif Regular 8, my nice neat 3 x 5 cards return.
Chili--Please try Microsoft Sans Serif Regular 8 and see what happens.

I tried it, Dick, and I think my 16-character entries are too large for the font and column width.
I notice also there are two font settings... one for the headers, and the other for the text body.
I will try experiment more (but I can't think of any other options?.
Thanks, Assaf and Dick.

I'm really talking about the setting for the text body, but as a trial, set them both to Microsoft Sans Serif Regular 8 and see what happens.
A number of my entries use the entire 16 characters, so that's not the cause of your problem.

Next version will increase column sizes depending on what font size was selected...Probably should have done that about 25 posts ago but at least we thoroughly rung out the problem.
