Hi Ya'll.. I'm new here and somewhat of a newbie to using these new scanners. I've used a Uniden BC 760 XLT and a BC 55 XLT but felt I was missing some things so I got a Uniden BCD 396 XT. Think I'm going to need some help using/programming  this one but I can see there's a lot of knowledgeable folks here and at RR.
I'd like to know if anyone has used any Speak to Text software. I have "Naturally Speaking" but I think that has to be programmed to your voice and may not understand what comes out of the scanner. I've thought about a digital voice recorder that has voice recognition and somehow plug that into the computer and read it as text.. Any suggestions?

Thanks,   CJ

Haven't had much luck with dragonsoft. I am not sure if you will have any luck whatsoever trying to get software to work over a scanner.  Users aren't expecting to talk into diction software, combine that with low fidelity and background noise, I would say if you want any kind of reliable record keeping at all you are probably better off using something like Scanner Recorder.

Can I ask what your plans are for this? Not sure I understand.

In any case, had a brief run with some voice recognition software several years ago. Had to read a short novel to it (something from Mark Twain but forget exactly what it was) to train the software to my voice/inflection/drawl/accent/whatever. After that, it did fairly well until one fateful night when I had a cold and went on a coughing jag...not a pretty sight! I went places in that computer that I had not seen before nor again. Computer was never the same after that. <g>

So, if you are trying to type out what is being said on the scanner, doubt that you will have much luck with that.

If you are trying to dictate labels for the freqs that you enter, I would encourage you to try EZ Grab in FreeSCAN.

Hope this gives you some feedback and maybe some ideas IF I got anywhere close to answering what you're trying to do.

Thanks for the replys. I guess I was asking for something that isn't possible or would cost to much. I like to watch the ballgame and listen to the scanner at the same time. If I could read what was coming out of the scanner while watching the ballgame that would be great. I don't like wearing ear phones either. Also when it gets late I wouldn't be bothering anyone else. Another thought is that deaf folks would possibly be able to actually read and see what was going on around them. It would work something like some instant messaging programs where you talk and the message is typed for you. The text would be transposed into a word processor. Thanks again for your input. This is a great site.

Can I ask which IM programs do this?

Can't imagine they are "good" at this as voice recognition hasn't been all that reliable in past. But I do find the VR in the car does a pretty decent job (windows up, A/C on low, radio off and all those other qualifiers <g>). Just would be interested in playing with one that did this to see how well it does.

Just curious I suppose.

Tom....I was using speach to text software with MSN IM but the results weren't what I expected so I haven't used it latley. It was mispelling words and leaving spaces, could have been my error but I gave up on that. Thanks for your replys.
