Assaf,

Here are my particulars:

 - The version of FreeSCAN you are running: .8E (the third version E)
 - What type of scanner(s) you are using:  BC396XT - this doesn't have to be connected
 - Did this happen in a previous version?: N/A
 - What OS you are using: Win Vista Ult. 64 bit
 - Browser: Firefox

I have not been able to get the "View in Google" function to work.  Once I obtain a fix I attempt to view it in Google.  A page comes up in Firefox but I get a "File Not Found" error.

I am attaching a .jpg file that shows the Firefox error.

Any help offered is appreciated.

Erich

This is a permissions issue, if you edit the permissions for the FreeSCAN folder, and give everyone full control it should work.

I had thought of that.  I added the group "everyone" and gave that group "full control" of the "scannow.org" folder which encompasses the sub-directory "FreeSCAN".  I checked the FreeScan directory just in case to make sure that the attributes were inherited and they were.  I also turned off User Access Controls and rebooted to make the change complete.  None of this had any impact on the problem with View in Google.

I only have vista 32-bit to test with. Is Firefox already loaded when you click on View in Google? The next thing I would try doing is setting Freescan so it runs with administrator rights.

I think it maybe the / before the C: and possibly it may need to be placed in quotes.  Just a shot in the dark..  Smiley

Assaf,

Once again, I anticipated the issue of admin rights and have been running it as admin.  In fact, in the Start Menu I am not able to choose "Run as Administrator" but have to go to the actual directory and select the executable freescan.exe then run with admin rights from there.

Running as admin has no effect on this issue.

Yes, Firefox is already loaded when this occurs.  I will try it unloaded.  Also, if you have 32 bit Vista to test with then 64 bit isn't all that different.  Only a different data length.

I will try setting IE as the default browser and see if that has an impact.

I set IE as the default browser and tested again.  It had no impact on the "View in Google" issue.

IE will definitley not work with it. The reason is is that it detects java script and automatically blocks it. In my tests I disabled all the security settings and it still refused to work. Firefox did work though under vista. The reason I asked if it was already loaded was that Firefox can take a long time to load, and about one second after the file gets created it gets deleted automatically.  Normally its lots of time for the browser to fetch and load the file, at least in my test, and being that you have a 64 bit system it should be plenty fast.

Assaf,

I have resolved a part of this problem.  When you mentioned Java in an earlier message I recognized what the likely source of the problem was.  I have a Firefox add-in loaded that selectively disables and enables JavaScript in Firefox called NoScript.  It is a valuable defensive tool.  Because I must specifically enable the source site of Java code your temporary page would not load thus causing the problem I've described.  When I turned NoScript off, though, the "View in Google" function of FreeSCAN worked just fine.  Partly.  It worked while looking up from an address or zip code and centered on the correct spot on the Google map.  However, when I used the "Copy to" function after getting the  fix or when entering the fix manually I still have the problem of loading the Google map.  JavaScript is entirely enabled at this time.

So, while a part of the problem has been resolved another seems to remain.  Also, since I very much like the "Noscript" add-on for Firefox I'm reluctant to disable it permanently.  I can enable Java on the FreeSCAN map page by enabling all "\\\file" sites like you use for Google mapping but that does open a bit of a hole in my protective defenses.  Not a big one, to be sure, but of some concern in any event.

Any suggestions on the remaining problem?

BTW, I've experienced a number of the problems described here with .8E.  Since you added so much functionality in it I'm not surprised that you've had some issues come up.  I very much appreciate your responsiveness and diligence at getting them fixed.  A fellow FreeSCAN user and I both wonder when you sleep!

NoScript strikes again! I used to use it myself but it broke so many websites that I uninstalled it. I don't know any other way to do other then to add an exception to the C: drive, drawing the circle needs java script to do it, uploading and then downloading again from a website is kind of inefficient. I'm not sure what the granularity NoScript allows, maybe you can point it towards freescan's directory and block everything else?

Well there have been a couple more bugs then usual lately, mostly because the rewrite in .Net changed the way things worked and a lot of subtle things got broken. I think though at this stage almost all of those have worked out. Now with the introduction of the XTs a couple more were introduced, but with all the testing that users have been doing and the fact I am going to be getting a 346 soon to do my own testing, should take care of those. I do owe a thanks to everyone who reported broken things and didn't just get frustrated and send off a flame mail.

I get plenty of time to sleep. I am on the website a lot though because I have constant internet access at work so it's tempting to check it every 15 minutes esp when i'm bored.

Assaf,

Keep in mind that I've now totally disabled NoScript yet still have the problem described when manually entering the coordinates or when using the "Copy to" function.

I fired up my Win7 machine to test this out now it doesn't want to connect to the internet, once I get it going I'll get back to you.

I can't seem to reproduce this problem. How are you entering in the coordinates? They should be something like 28.112233 Has anyone else run into this problem?
