Have my bc996 hooked to com port 1.  Freescan never auto detects the port nor can I connect manually with com port 1 and 115200 baud.  Freescan works in Windows on the same com port.  Anybody got some ideas?

Might have to review Wine's COM Port configuration file to make sure the simulated COM1 is actually pointing to the correct/dev/tty device in linux.

Ok, but I looked at wine configuration program, but there was nothing there about com ports.  So, I assume that there is a wine configuration file somewhere...correct?
Will hunt that up.

Well, I have looked all over and cannot find a wine configuration file...even turned on "show hidden files." There is a userreg file and one other reg file..I changed the empty string to com 1, but that did not help. Some just say port 1 not com port 1.  Do you have any more tips..I am stumped.

That was a real good suggestion about a link to com1.  Too bad it didn't work.  I even changed to permissions on the com port...no help.  This bugs me no end since I have two Kenwood memory programs that don't work either.  Has anybody on this list made Freescan work in linux?

I have gotten it to work with a USB/serial adaptor. I did have to make the /dev/tty device world-writable though, thanks for jogging my memory with that permission bit. Beyond that you might have a scanner configuration problem, are you using the front port? did you check that the baud rate is set properly?

Yea, I am using the front port.  Freescan does work in Windows.  The baud rate in the 996 is 115200.  Might try a usb dongle, tomorrow.

As I recall to use the Prolific USB-Serial adaptor I had to recompile the kernel to include driver support for that chipset. That was fun!

I have been wondering if it would be possible to let the user type in the linux device in the com port box instead of com1...e.g. /dev/ttyS0.  I also am beginning to wonder if the serial port on this laptop is dead.  Still checking that out.

Its just not possible because under Wine there is no way to detect linux devices, and creating the link should do the trick.

Or if there is a way I am not going to make my brain blow up figuring out another linux puzzle. If they built cars the way they built linux, you would have to do a complete engine teardown and rebuild to change radio stations.

Have you tried using a modem terminal emulater to access the scanner through linux?

Now you've got me.  What is a terminal emulator?
