Discontinuing Yahoo Freescan Group

One of the very nice things about the Yahoo Freescan Group is that members can receive emails whenever there's a new post or receive a daily digest of new posts. I'll miss that feature and, as a result, probably won't participate that much in this new standalone forum.

I know there are some people that will miss having new messages sent to their inbox. I'm not sure if this system can send every message to the inbox, but if you click on Profile, then Notifications and Emails, you can set it up so it emails you every time there is a reply in a forum or topic you are interested in. You select the forum you want to be notified for by clicking on the forum, then clicking on the Notify button on the right side of the screen. You can even click on the "Show unread posts since your last visit" to get a summary. I agree its not as easy as on Yahoo, but thats one small disadvantage over the many advantages of having a big forum to move around in.

You're right, there does seem to be more flexibility than I originally thought. I think having a dedicated forum is a great idea. I have gotten used to Yahoo Groups, which really work well, and hope ScanNow.org works well too.

It sounds like you weren't around for the debacle of not being able to GET to yahoo groups. There was a time for a week or two where the group would be there but nothing else, no messages, no files, oops back to normal, ok read a message, oh, can't find that nothing there. It was a REAL mess. And it was NOT just the FreeSCAN area that was affected by whatever was going on, I noticed of the groups that I read were acting the same way. Can't that *I* will miss *that*. <g>

These are *MY* views and I am not speaking for anyone else.
I don't know if Assaf is open to continuing the Yahoo group or not. The way I read his notice, it seemed pretty cut and dried to me. (we're moving)
Let's assume for a moment that the Yahoo group WOULD be kept "alive". What does that result in?
More time to check both places, not only for Assaf, but all others wishing to remain current
More confusion in that there is always going to be "I asked that on the other place"
or
double posts - the same question to BOTH yahoo and here and with double posts you wind up posting at least (see other place for answer)
Now for other issues:
It's more convenient - eye of the beholder and usually a click of a bookmark - *I* can't see a big deal there
I get emailed from Yahoo - ok, you can set that up here as well - yes it will be a bit different
Here you have to set up your own account (once) - I see that as freeing up time for Assaf to work
As you have probably already gathered from my previous message, I'm not a big fan of the way the Yahoo group worked out. Most of the time, yes, it was quite serviceable. But this is under Assaf's control and I have a lot of faith in him seeing what he has done with his program. It is a VERY nice program and improving over time (just wish I had a 396 to use some of those new features <g>). It is a FREE program, he only asks (very politely I might add) for donations if you can. It looks to me like we can minimize the time he spends on "other stuff" by going along with the transition to the new forum here. I don't think that's a lot to ask of us.
My thoughts and worth absolutely every bit you paid for them. <wide grin>
Please note that I *do* have my asbestos underwear on, so alternative comments will be welcomed.
Assaf, if I have inadvertantly "put words in your mouth" or misquoted you somehow, PLEASE correct me. I did not mean for that to be the case.
Tom

Hey Tom. I am going to keep the Yahoo group on life support for a bit, not as far as posting updates but just alive because not everybody checks it that often so if it disappeared underneath them they might wonder what happend.
I think abandoning the Yahoo group is just one of the growing pains that has to be gone through. Like when the file format changed way back when and you couldn't load the old files again, or when the file extension changed, or when the old 246-only version was abandoned and replaced with the 396 version, again creating a file compatiblity issue. Overall I think these changes might have been a bit painful esp for those who arent the best with computers or who spent a lot of time making data files in the old .0001 to .0004 versions, but they led to a better product in the end, kind of like going through a software puberty. Can i say that on TV? Puberty?
The only real trouble right now is there isnt any way for users to share data files other than posting them with files attatched, but thats something I'm going to fix in the future.

Now that were coming up on two months since scannow.org came into existence, it seems to me that this forum maybe kinda lost.
If you take away Assaf's and tomvanderpool's posts there really isn't much going on.
Not much in the regional forums, especially the U.S.
Freescan is far superior to the other scanning programs. When bctool has an update I try it out, but when I get into trouble, freescan bails me out.
I don't even use arc396 anymore.
Where are all those members who were part of the yahoo group?
?

Advertise, Advertise, Advertise. Yahoo groups usually have lots of members, shadow members, but usually the same ones join in..They join and then you don't see them anymore..Either that or they defected and went to the bcTools yahoo group?

Well adaptation to this web site has been a little bit slower than what I would have liked. I had almost 900 in the yahoo group after 3 months, here after nearly 2 months its about 130. But I think this can be explained by the fact that with Yahoo you have to join the group to download the file. So a lot of people joined because they wanted to try it out the software, certainly never had 800 posters thats for sure. On this website you can download the program and browse the forums without signing up to anything and i think most people feel comfortable doing that
I would actually like to know how many people out there are using it. I think what i'll do in the future is add an automatic update option, and make it user optional to send a unique anonymous ID when checking for the update. That would give me a pretty good idea on the install base.

Well it won't be as bad as that. I'm just talking about an randomly generated ID that can't be traced back to anyone and can be turned off. Even if its turned on, its probably still sending a lot less information back home then just about every other program on your computer.
One guy on RR posted about his Garmin GPS, apparentley when connected to the net for updates, the GPS will automatically sends such as information as where you are, where you have been, and all the routes you have been on, not to mention your name and all that stuff. He says he doesn't mind it. Personally, I think i'm going to go ahead and not get a Garmin. Its just a balance between total anonminity and total invasion of privacy, and you can see where some of these companies like to sit.
