So what does everyone think about creating such a beast? There is already open source software out there for decoding the data channel, just nothing that will take the bits and plug them into a vocoder to recover the audio.

Can I ask the "why" question? For radios that don't have the P25 already?

I guess you could also (maybe) add the stuff for the NAC (I think that's what it's called - network) that the 996 or the 396 don't have but the GRE's do. Not sure just what you're going to do with that info.

The idea is just to be able to listen to digital audio on scanners that can't decode it themselves. In  addition, as many agencies are now going encrypted, it will make it theortically possible (if a key can be found) to decode and still be able to listen. I think its going to be the future of this hobby when eventually everything becomes encrypted.
