996 Firmware update
«

Just finished doing mine a bit earlier today. SAID I was going to wait, but saw that things on the whole seemed to be going pretty well.
Got sucked in....
Well, I'll just do the update to the x.x.14 level and be ready for going to v2.0 when Upman returns (just in case something goes wrong he can come to the rescue).
Hey, that went remarkably well, guess I can try the update to v2.0 (using the same installer)...seemed easy enough.
Going to 2.0 was just more of the same as with the x.14 update.
I *did* read all the documents with the firmware and they were pretty helpful. The real nitty-gritty was just a few sentences (go here, do this, run the program and follow the prompts).
Didn't seem nearly as involved and frustrating as some of the folks on the other boards are trying to make it out to be. The Uniden web site is a bit of a challenge, but if you know the "secret" (and that is that even though things look like plain text, it's really LINKS) it works out pretty well.
Have to say it went smoothly and I like what I'm hearing now. P25 seems to be noticably improved and the standard stuff that I listen to is also better. The whole radio sounds like it's more "crisp"" or cleaner or something. Worth the effort.
special note to Assaf: as you can tell, I didn't hold off nearly as long as I thought I would. <wide grin>

Mabey its not the hardest thing for you, but don't forget you are a system administrator (or something). Reading the boards it seems that a lot of people have gotten really frustrated trying to do this, and ofcourse not reading the instructions and not reading what anyone else has posted hasn't helped matters. It seems to me that a lot of people are confounded by 1) How to turn it on while pressing L/o+6, 2) The blank green or blue screen, mabey it would have helped if uniden designed it so it says "Ready to Receive Update" rather then looking like it just bricked and putting people into panic mode 3) The uniden website which makes hyperlinks you need to click on look like regular text.
All in all i feel kinda sorry for upman being at the front for this, he must have about 500 messages in his inbox right now.

You should know by now, I'm not any smarter than the average bear. <g>
And there are days, when I wish I were even THAT smart!
I *do* have to go along with you on the Uniden web site.... I have NEVER seen links harder to pick out especially when they are critical to the operation of the whole upgrade. Really made that a pain but I had read something about that in one of the groups so was kind of ready for it.
Seems like most of the people are having trouble reading the instructions - as in NOT even attempting to read them before hand. Guys, you're risking your expensive scanner by THINKING you know what you're doing. This is a very good time to see what Uniden wants you to do rather than guess.
Saw one guy had trouble, had is 3rd grade daughter do it for him...so the instructions aren't that bad. <g>

They aren't the worst, still though could have been a lot simpler. Everyone seems to agree audio reception is improved, i have noticed less chopiness on weak transmissions, but other than that it seems about the same to me. One wonders how much of this improvement is the placebo effect. After all, months of discussions took place before the update came out, Anticipation and expectations were very high. Never have I seen so much fervor over a firmware update but then again I don't monitor the iPhone boards.

If it IS the placebo effect, it worked on me. I really don't THINK that I was inclined one way or another as to the results of the update (first I had ever done to my radio). Didn't really know what to expect, but after a very short time of listening to the P25 that I want to monitor, I was pretty sure it was VERY noticeably different. And I think they have the balance between digital and analog systems much better. I don't think they carried my AGC settings forward, but maybe.
There are still some naysayers, but I'm getting the feeling they are all trying to monitor very specific systems that may be problematic to begin with.
All in all, from what I have seen - it is a worthwhile update. As always, YMMV. <g>

Hey Tom!
Not to hijack the thread, but just a quick note to let you know, I finally got around to installing Firefox. I do have to grudgingly admit it has some nice features (I like some of the themes or skins.) Right now I'm still switching between IE7 and FF2. Mostly out of familiarity with the former. But I am at least giving Mozilla a fair shake.
Thanks for the heads up!

I figured we'd get you eventually. <g>
When you think you've conquered FireFox, try out the Foxmarks. I am totally in love with that thing. Basically gives you the same bookmarks on ANY computer you use with FireFox on it. What's the big deal? Well, I have 6 here at the house and 3 at work and all the bookmarks are the same. Now THAT is NICE!
And if you add something to a bookmark at one place, it shows up everywhere, you never really have to "sync" (it does it in the background as you work or when you shutdown, whichever comes first).
They have several neat addons like that.
And if you're liking the tabs (another thing I'm in love with...have 4 open right now) - give control-Tab a try...will rotate between all the open tabs. Shift-control-tab, of course, goes backwards through them.
So, have YOU done your firmware update or you been too busy with Firefox? <chuckle - and easing it back on topic>

Actually, I don't think they've gotten around to the 246T yet. They posted a new firmware uploader as of 04/16/2008, but the latest actual firmware file is still dated I think from November of 2006, and last I checked is the same as what I currently have. So I guess I'm still waiting for mine. Of course, if I'm wrong, I would be delighted to hear how I can remedy the problem.
So what sort of goodies did the 396/996 folks get? I've heard some improvements with the audio, which is nice. Any extended functionality, ranges, etc.?
I must confess I haven't even had a chance to listen to my radio in probably over a month now. Just busy with "stuff", and not enough hours in a day.
